as protrayed in the film

Characters

Cloud Strife Cloud
Age: 23
Birthday: August 11*
Height: 5'7"
Role in AC: Main Character
Role in FFVII: Main Character

A failed experiment of The Jenova Project, Cloud Strife led AVALANCHE to defeat Sephiroth at the end of FFVII. In the two years following, he established the Strife Delivery Service to ferry goods across the lands using his bike, Fenrir. Cloud was also infected with Geostigma that covered his left arm in sores, which he hid under a long, black sleeve. The loss of Aerith during their travels weighed heavily on his mind, and the combination of all these drove Cloud to leave Seventh Heaven and stay in her church.
With the emergence of Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz, Cloud was forced to fight again when they kidnapped children from Edge. With the encouragement of his friends, and the otherworldly reassurances of Aerith, he was able to battle his inner demons to emerge victorious in a final battle with Sephiroth. His Geostigma was healed by Aerith's rain, and Cloud closed his story in Advent Children with a soft glimpse of a small peaceful smile.

*Cloud's birthday was originally August 19 in the FFVII manual, but for an unknown reason it has been changed according to the official AC site.

Tifa Lockhart Tifa
Age: 22
Birthday: May 3
Height: 5'4"
Role in AC: Main Female Character
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Cloud Strife's childhood friend from Nibelheim, martial artist Tifa Lockhart was the owner of the Seventh Heaven bar in Midgar and an original member of rebel group, AVALANCHE. She fought against Shinra Inc. with Barret, and later accompanied Cloud on his journey to defeat Sephiroth. Tifa held the key to unlocking Cloud's true past, and continued support him two years after FFVII.

She rebuilt the Seventh Heaven bar in Edge with the help of Barret and Cloud, and continued to look after Marlene in Barret's absence. She was regularly frustrated by Cloud's condition and his insistence at segregating himself from his friends, culminating in a desperate, exasperated argument in Advent Children after Marlene was kidnapped by Loz. Tifa later joined the rest of the regrouped AVALANCHE in battling Bahamut Sin in Edge.

Marlene Marlene
Age: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: Returning character
Role in FFVII: adopted daughter of Barret

Barret's adopted daughter, Marlene was raised by Barret in FFVII, but she now lives apart from him, under Tifa's care. She is deeply concerned for Denzel, who is afflicted with geostigma.

Denzel Denzel
Age: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: orphan with geostigma

One of the many child victim's of geostigma. Tifa looks after Denzel, and he and Marlene are close. Yet from time to time his expression seems vacant...

Rufus Shinra Rufus Shinra
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Height: N/A
Role in AC: Wheelchair Person
Role in FFVII: Non-playable (enemy)

Son of President ShinRa, Rufus was Vice-President until the sudden death of his father at the hands of Sephiroth. Rufus was then promoted to President of ShinRa Inc., and immediately made clear his desire to rule by fear rather than money. He pursued Sephiroth in an attempt to find the Promised Land -- a journey that led him to face down the Diamond Weapon as it tried to destroy Midgar. The Weapon shot a powerful blast that destroyed the ShinRa tower, but Rufus survived due to timely rescue by paramedics.

Two years after FFVII, Rufus was infected by Geostigma and received treatment at the Healin Lodge, his sores covered by bandages (although in a wheelchair, Rufus was able to walk and only confined himself to it as part of his "performance"). He attained Jenova's head from the Northern Crater, and sought Cloud's services as a bodyguard to protect it from Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. His request was turned down, and Rufus was later kidnapped by Kadaj, which led to a showdown between the two.

Reno Reno
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Height: N/A
Role in AC: Turk working for Rufus Shinra
Role in FFVII: Non-playable (enemy)

Loud, reckless and laid-back, Reno was put in charge of the Turks after Tseng was injured, belying his seniority despite his slacker appearance. He is usually seen fighting alongside Rude.

He fights with an electric rod and communicates easily with his supposed enemies, AVALANCHE, as shown when he called Tifa to request for Cloud's services in Advent Children. Reno and Rude also brought Cloud and Tifa's unconscious bodies back to the Seventh Heaven after Tifa's battle with Loz. Although refusing to follow Cloud's wishes to rescue the children in the Sleeping Forest, Reno and Rude assisted in battling Yazoo and Loz respectively in Edge.

Rude Rude
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Height: N/A
Role in AC: Turk working for Rufus Shinra
Role in FFVII: Non-playable (enemy)

The complete opposite of his boisterous partner, Rude is the quiet, composed other half. He fights bare-fisted and is always seen wearing dark sunglasses, although they were accidentally broken by Reno in the fight with Yazoo and Loz. Nevertheless, Rude always has an extra spare should that happen.

He has admitted to having a crush on Tifa, and assisted Reno in bringing Cloud and Tifa's unconscious bodies back to Seventh Heaven. He also accompanied his partner in facing off against Yazoo and Loz in Edge.

Vincent Valentine Vincent
Age: 27
Birthday: October 13
Height: 6'0"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character (hidden)

A former Turk, Vincent was charged with protecting the group of scientists involved in The Jenova Project: Gast, Lucrecia Crescent and Hojo. He fell in love with Lucrecia, but it went unrequited when she chose Hojo instead. After the birth of Sephiroth, Vincent confronted Hojo, only to be shot and put in a state of permanent agelessness by the mad scientist. He was discovered locked in a coffin by Cloud under the ShinRa mansion in Nibelheim.

Vincent apparently kept tabs on the development of Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz -- as he was able to inform Cloud of their origins after saving him from an intense battle at the Sleeping Forest. Vincent surprised Cloud when admitting that he had never tried to find forgiveness for his sin of failing Lucrecia, the woman he loved, which spurred Cloud to pick himself up. Vincent was also the only member of AVALANCHE not to have a cellphone, which shocked Marlene so that she almost scolded him for it.

Vincent traveled to Edge to buy a phone -- and also assist his former comrades in battling Bahamut Sin.

Barret Wallace Barret
Age: 37
Birthday: December 15
Height: 6'4"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Hailing from Corel, Barret swore revenge on ShinRa Inc. when his hometown was destroyed by their malfunctioning Mako Reactor. He lost his best friend, Dyne, his wife, Eleanor and in his right arm in the ensuing conflict; all that he had left was Marlene, Dyne's young daughter whom he adopted under his care. Barret formed AVALANCHE with Tifa, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge and fought against the ShinRa in Midgar by bombing their Mako Reactors.

Barret helped Tifa and Cloud rebuild the Seventh Heaven bar in Edge, but left soon after its opening to look for a new source of energy. On the last day before his departure, he spent the night talking with his precious daughter. He regularly called back to speak to Marlene, but only returned to Edge when Bahamut Sin was attacking the city to battle alongside his former comrades.

Cait Sith Cait Sith
Age: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: 3'2"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Cait Sith was a talking black cat perched atop a giant, white moogle. It was actually a robot controlled from elsewhere by Reeve, a top employee of ShinRa. Inc. While originally a spy who gave Tseng the Key to the Temple of the Ancients, Cait Sith continued traveling with AVALANCHE and eventually turned to their side, redeeming himself by sacrificing his puppet body to gain the Black Materia.

While Reeve continued to rebuild Midgar by forming the World Regeneration Organization, he sent Cait Sith alone to assist AVALANCHE in their battle against Bahamut Sin in Edge. He fought alongside Red XIII, perched on his back.

Cid Highwind Cid
Age: 34
Birthday: February 22
Height: 5'8"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Cid Highwind was originally an aspiring astronaut under the ShinRa Space Program, but his dream of going to space was crushed with the cancellation of the project as the ShinRa chose to delve into Mako energy instead. Cid, himself, pushed the abort button when Shera refused to leave the rocket before her repairs were done. Coarse and brash, Cid continued to live in Rocket Town until joining AVALANCHE to fight Sephiroth. The Highwind, his airship, was destroyed when the group escaped from the crumbling Northern Crater.

Cid returned two years later in his new ship, the *Sierra (named after Shera) to assist Cloud and Tifa in protecting Edge from Bahamut Sin's attacks.

*in the film voice track & closed caption he says Shera

Red XIII (Nanaki) Red XIII
Age: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: 3'7"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Originally known as Nanaki, Red XIII was the last of his species, a wolf/dog hybrid capable of human speech. He was imprisoned as an experimental subject by Hojo of ShinRa Inc., who attempted to cross-breed him with Aerith in an attempt to create a Cetra with a longer lifespan. He escaped when Cloud, Tifa and Barret broke into ShinRa Headquarters to rescue Aerith.

Red XIII had always lived believing his father was a coward, but a trip to Cosmo Canyon proved that his father had been protecting their homeland all along. He continued to accompany Cloud in pursuit of Sephiroth, and returned two years later to assist AVALANCHE in battling Bahamut Sin in Edge.

Yuffie Kisaragi Yuffie
Age: 18
Birthday: November 20
Height: 5'2"
Role in AC: Returning Party Member
Role in FFVII: Playable Character (hidden)

Daughter of Godo, Lord of Wutai, Yuffie Kisaragi was a spunky, headstrong ninja adamant about recovering her hometown's lost glory in the war with ShinRa. She embarked on a trip to collect (or steal) materia, which led her to meet with AVALANCHE and eventually join them (for their materia). After the battle with Sephiroth, Yuffie surprisingly entrusted the group's materia to Cloud, who left them idly on the floor of Aerith's church.

Yuffie has called Cloud before to inform him of the missing children from Wutai, but made her return by parachuting into Edge to assist the group in their fight against Bahamut Sin. Her landing showed that Yuffie had yet to get over her motion sickness, something that plagued her during her travels on the Highwind.

Aerith Gainsborough Aerith
Age: 25*
Birthday: February 22
Height: 5'3"
Role in AC: Provides Guidance to Cloud
Role in FFVII: Playable Character

Aerith was the last of the Cetra, a group of people closely attuned to the Planet. A half-Cetra, she was the daughter of Professor Gast and Ifalna. The Shinra believed she held the secret to the Cetra's Promised Land -- but Aerith also held the key to saving the Planet from Sephiroth, for she was the only one capable of activating the White Materia, summoning Holy to counter the effects of Meteor. Aerith died while praying for Holy in the Forgotten City of the Ancients, by the blade of Sephiroth's Masamune. Her death enraged Cloud, and continued to haunt him despite his defeat of Sephiroth at the end of FFVII.

Aerith returned in Advent Children, assisting Cloud from the afterlife, reassuring him of his guiltlessness in her death. She also provided the rain that healed the Geostigma disease that had infected Cloud, Rufus and many children; and saved Cloud after he was shot by Yazoo. She provided comfort in her departure, walking through her church doors, framed by light.

*indicates her age if she were to be still living, as she was 23 in FFVII

Zack Zack
Age: Unkown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: Provides Guidance to Cloud
Role in FFVII: Cloud's best friend in SOLDIER.

Zack was Cloud's best friend as a grunt working for ShinRa. Zack was a SOLDIER First Class, yet he always looked out for Cloud. His future looked bright, but he was killed in FFVII by ShinRa soldiers. He appears in AC as a sort of spirit form just like Aerith.

Tseng Tseng
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Height: N/A
Role in AC: Turk
Role in FFVII: Non-playable (enemy)

Leader of the Turks, Tseng served President ShinRa and, later, Rufus directly. Although he cared for Aerith, he kidnapped her under President ShinRa's orders and later traveled to investigate the Temple of the Ancients. It is there that he was severely injured by Sephiroth, but was able to recover and return to duty.

He and Elena investigated the Northern Crater in the later half of the two years preceding Advent Children, but they were caught and tortured by Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. Their bloodied identity cards were presented to Rufus as proof. Tseng made another comeback as he and Elena were present to support Rufus after the ex-President's showdown with Kadaj.

Elena Elena
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Height: N/A
Role in AC: Turk
Role in FFVII: Non-playable (enemy)

Rookie Turk, she was promoted to join her seniors when Reno was injured during the plan to destroy Sector 7. A bit light-headed, with the tendency to reveal core information to the enemy, Elena was nevertheless extremely loyal to her boss and focused on carrying out her duty as a Turk. She harbored feelings for Tseng, and took his injury at Sephiroth's hands extremely personally.

She accompanied Tseng to investigate the Northern Crater after FFVII, only to be defeated, caught and tortured by Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. She made her return to back Rufus up after the latter's showdown with Kadaj.

The Enemies

Septhiroth Sephiroth
Age Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Height 6'1
Role in AC: Turk
Role in FFVII: Top ranking SOLDIER officer, Non-playable (enemy)

Sephiroth is the chief antagonist of the RPG Final Fantasy VII, produced by Squaresoft. He appears as a tall, handsome bishounen character with long silver hair, bright blue-green eyes, a long black coat, and metallic shoulder guards. He carries the sword Masamune (a weapon that has appeared in each installment of the Final Fantasy series). He was the most famous member of SOLDIER, the paramilitary branch of Shin-Ra, until he mysteriously disappeared five years prior to the start of the game. He then returns to enact a sinister plot which threatens the game's world, and which the game's heroes must stop.

His name comes from the Kabbalah, in which the ten sephiroth on the Tree of Life represent different aspects of God.

Sephiroth was born at least 30 years before the start of the game to Professor Hojo and Lucrecia of Shin-Ra (however, some fans speculate that Vincent Valentine was his actual biological father). Before Sephiroth's birth, Hojo and Lucrecia were working as assistants to Professor Gast, Shin-Ra's top scientist, on the JENOVA Project. The project studied the remains of an extra-terrestrial entity known as JENOVA, which was mistakenly thought to be one of the Cetra, an ancient people of the world that the game takes place in. Wishing to create a modern day Ancient, and believing that the blood of the Cetra was what would do this rather than the lifestyle of the Cetra, Hojo and Lucrecia consented to their unborn child being injected with JENOVA's Cells, offering up both the unborn Sephiroth and Lucrecia herself to experimentation. Gast and Hojo then injected cell samples from JENOVA into Sephiroth while he was in Lucrecia's womb.

After his birth, Shin-Ra raised Sephiroth to be a supersoldier, and told him nothing of his actual parents except that his mother's name was "Jenova." He proved to be an incredibly strong and effective member of SOLDIER, gaining worldwide fame for his exploits such as his role in Midgar's victory against Wutai. Source: Wikipedia

He kills Aerith, runs his sword Masamune right through her from behind. After much madness and mayhem caused by his wanting to destroy the planet, he is defeated in FFVII.

Two years following the defeat of Sephiroth, a malady called "Geostigma" has spread throughout the world, afflicting many with its ill effects of extreme fatigue and open sores on the skin. The now reclusive Cloud finds himself confronted by a strange trio of men. Their leader, Kadaj, bears a resemblance to Sephiroth. When he absorbs Jenova cells into his body, he becomes Sephiroth. Despite Cloud being outmatched, he defeats Sephiroth with his new Omnislash Version 5 Limit Break and Sephiroth then fades away, leaving a mortally wounded Kadaj in his place. His final words to Cloud as he does so, "I will..never be a memory.", could be taken to mean that, despite his Remants returning to the lifestream and his spirit diluted, Sephiroth will never truly be gone and will continue to exist in one form or another.

A revised One-Winged Angel theme, Advent: One-Winged Angel (Sairin: Katayoku no Tenshi), is played throughout the battle between Cloud and Sephiroth, this time with the progressive metal stylings of Nobuo Uematsu's band "The Black Mages" as well as orchestral elements and new lyrics.

Kadaj Kadaj
Age teens
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: leader of gang that fights Cloud (enemy)

Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo are trying to find Mother. (Jenova) Kadaj is their leader, obsessed, childish and cunning but a brilliant fighter, ruthless and savage. After Sephiroth is defeated and stops using Kadaj's body, he dies and is absorbed back into the Lifestream.

Loz Loz
Age 20s
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: part of the gang that fights Cloud (enemy)

A young man who is a crybaby despite his fierce demeanor and strength. He uses a nasty weapon called a "Dual Hand" which is a stun gun that doubles as a shield. He severly hurts Tifa with it when he battles her. He dies after a terrific clash with Cloud and Yazoo and is absorbed into the Lifestream.

Yazoo Yazoo
Age 20s
Birthday: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Role in AC: part of the gang that fights Cloud (enemy)

A bit of an enigma. He's rather bland (or maybe it's uninterested) but is blindly loyal to Kadaj. He's a fierce fighter and deadly enemy. He dies after a terrific clash with Cloud and Loz and is absorbed into the Lifestream.

Creatures

Jenova Jenova
In FFVII, Jenova is indicated to be an extraterrestrial lifeform, composed of a colony of viral cells. Her name has long been speculated to be a portmanteau of "Jehovah" and "nova," the Hebrew name of God and the Latin word for "new," thus meaning "New God." Various points of symbolic signifiance within the game's storyline may support this notion, but it has not as yet been confirmed. The creature is also known as "the Calamity from the Sky/Skies" or "Heaven's Dark Harbringer".

Jenova has a major role in the continuity of Final Fantasy VII plot. In the game, many of the main characters, including Cloud Strife and Zack, have been injected with Jenova cells at some point in their lives. All members of SOLDIER were also given Jenova cells, as were the "Sephiroth clones" in Nibelheim. Additionally, all these individuals were infused with mako. This procedure leaves its subjects stronger and more resilient to physical attacks, but the cells and mako can also have various effects on one's mind, some beneficial (improved magical ability) and others detrimental (insanity). Sephiroth's case is more enhanced as he was injected with Jenova cells while in the fetal stage, giving him some extra abilities as a result.

Kadaj transforms into Sephiroth after absorbing the contents of a case containing Jenova's cells.

Bahamut Sin Bahamut Sin
Age: Unknown
Role in AC: Summoned by Kadaj (enemy)
Role in FFVII: Guardian Force

Bahamut will only grant his alliance after determining a player's worth in battle in Final Fantasy VII, and after gaining this alliance, he is one of the most powerful summoned allies available. He is known for his devastating battle technique called Mega Flare, where he exhales a powerful magical blast at all his opponents. He returns in FFVII: AC bigger and badder than ever.

As the group tries to defeat it, Bahamut Sin flies upward to escape the numerous attacks made on him. Cloud, with a little help from his friends, flies upward after Bahamut Sin, who launches a giant attack on the city. Before the attack is successful, Cloud breaks through it, and with some help from Aerith, defeats Bahamut Sin and saves Edge on the outskirts of Midgar.
